Simple Garage Door Maintenance

in Garage

Your garage door is probably always on your 'to-do list'. However, it may not be high on that list and will, therefore, usually get put off. If a storage garage is working correctly, chances are, you don't appreciate it. When things go wrong, however, you will almost certainly notice it. So, it is a good idea to keep your garage entry door maintained with annual checks and repairs. Thankfully, maintaining your garage doorway is inexpensive and relatively easy.

1. First, have a look at the rollers, tracks, hinges and springs to ensure that they are in good working order. It is wise to give all of theses moving parts a dose of a solvent spray, such as WD-40. If you have a torsion spring garage doorway, be sure to lubricate the bearings, too. If, on the other hand, you have a extension spring door, the pulleys will need lubrication.

2. Next, wipe all of the moving parts with a clean, dry cloth. Then, apply a 3-in-1 lubricant, or other light oil, to all of the parts mentioned above.

3. Sometimes, car port doors can become stuck or stiff and this is usually thanks to the rollers or hinges. If this is the case, you may like to try soaking the effected part, or parts, in kerosene. A small paintbrush or toothbrush should be used to penetrate the small crevices. If there is any sign of rust, you may need to remove this with wire or steel wool. Then, as above, wipe the area clean and apply a lubricant.

4. It is always wise to apply these same maintenance rules to the garage entry door opener. If your opener functions with a drive screw or chain, it is a good idea to lubricate these parts.

5. If there is weather strip around the storage garage, ensure that it is in good condition and not causing an obstruction when opening or closing the door. Good quality weather strip can last for a few years, but if yours has seen better days, it should be replaced.

6. In the case of wooden garage doorways, external maintenance needs to be carried out in the form of painting or staining the door. Ideally, this should be done once a year to avoid rotting and warping. If some panels on your timber door are already showing signs of rot, you may need to replace them.

Storage garage maintenance should be on your list of annual chores. It may not be the most exhilarating way to spend an afternoon, but it is simple, inexpensive and can prevent serious problems in the future.
